Here are some features which make the writing of technical documents particularly easy:
File Format: The file on disk is of type TEXT, and the Nisus on-disk file format is understood by all compilers and text editors. All the formatting and graphics on the graphics layer (except footnote marks and such things as time & date variables) are saved in the resource fork of the file and so do not interfere with compilers. The text portion of Nisus files can be transferred to other computers without any special preparation.
Automation: Nisus can be programmed (using its unique and powerful macro language) to automatically re-format your document. For example, you can use a macro to bold or italicize all key words from a list, indent to the correct level the beginning of each function or declaration, and highlight any portions of the code in any way. You can automatically index all key words in your document, creating a separate editable document containing the index to all the functions in your code. You can write a macro which will produce a function dependancy list for your code or mark all functions in the code with invisible, accessible electronic markers.
The fact that data part of Nisus files stores pure ASCII text allows any other application to read the text position of the files. Further it allows you to move the text portion of Nisus files across different platforms just as easily as moving text files.
Integrated Graphics. The ease with which you can draw at the same time as you type, makes simple the preparation of graphically illustrated lecture presentations.
Search & Replace. The whole library of text description tools available in Nisus allows you to search and replace any text pattern you can describe. The ability to search through any number of unopened files for that mention of a topic you want to write about again, makes it easy to keep your notes in Nisus. It also saves you the money you would spend for special programs that do nothing else but this search!
Call-out boxes: Using our graphics tools, you can type a call-out box, rotate it or move it anywhere on the page (including the margins), draw an arrow attached to your call-out box, and still be sure that your compiler or editor will be able to read the text content of the code, ignoring the call-out box. Nisus, of course, will read the entire contents of the file. Using the graphics tools, you can even draw flow charts of parts of your program inside the code without affecting the ability to use the file in your compiler!
Invisible Markers: The ability to mark text with named markers allows even more detail in your code documentation.
Hyper-Text Like: Using another Nisus unique feature, you can arrange to link marked text in your code to other parts of the document or to other documents on disk in such a way that command double-clicking the marked text will jump you to the location of the text linked to it.
Many Files Project: Using the Open Selection command you can have a master file which specifies all the file names in your project. Then, with one menu command, you can open them all at once. Alternatively, at the end of each file you can have the name of the next file, which you can open with a single command.
Connectivity: You can write macros which will convert your mainframe unformatted writings into beautifully formatted and arranged Nisus documents, all with one menu command. Think of the time saved!
